Green Space Miami is the Green Family Foundation's new art space. Guided by the Foundation’s principles of inclusion, community empowerment and education. Green Space Miami centers marginalized stories at the intersections of lived experience, hosted in a space for dialogue.
Green Space Miami’s mission is to be a catalyst for action around critical social issues, collaborating with community partners and educational institutions.
The Green Space Initiative is Green Space Miami's inaugural project, investing in artists based in Miami-Dade County.
What is it? Advised by a committee of arts and education leaders, Green Space Initiative will grant $5,000 each to ten visual artists in recognition of work that illuminates critical social issues. Green Space Miami will announce the selected artists before the end of the year. The work of the selected artists will be exhibited together at a later date and time.
Who is it for? Green Space Initiative seeks to support professional BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) visual artists based in Miami-Dade County who have lost income due to projects, exhibitions, and educational roles being cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Excludes currently employed full-time college professors and K-12 teachers.
What work is eligible? 2-D techniques (i.e. paintings, drawings, prints), 3-D techniques (i.e. sculpture, ceramics), photography, and video submissions will be accepted. Green Space Initiative seeks artists whose practice illuminates the conversations around critical social issues such as race, gender identity, immigration, justice system reform, access to healthcare, and education.
Why? Measures essential to contain the spread of COVID-19 have frozen the art market and cancelled the cultural calendar. Many of Miami-Dade County's artists are unable to exhibit, perform, participate, or teach. Beyond lock-downs and travel bans, this extended standstill has the potential to wipe out a generation of artists due to cancellation of work, lack of opportunities, and loss of income.
